The Truth About Salsa and Bachata Dancing: Growth Requires More Than the Social Dance Floor

I’ve been dancing for over a decade now, and I’ve had the privilege of meeting many amazing dancers. Some of them started alongside me, while others joined along the way. But here’s something I’ve noticed over the years: not everyone who says they’ve been dancing for 10 years has truly grown as a dancer. In fact, you can often spot them on the social floor—they still look like beginners.

Why is that?

The answer is simple: they aren’t consistent with their learning.

Many dancers fall into the trap of believing that the social floor is the best place to improve their skills. They attend socials regularly, thinking that this will somehow lead to massive growth. But the truth is, real progress happens in the classroom, not on the social floor. Social dancing is fun, no doubt about it, but it’s not designed to teach you the finer details that elevate your dancing.

I’ve met people who have been dancing for years, yet their movements, technique, and overall confidence haven’t improved. Why? Because they haven’t put in the effort to learn consistently. They avoid classes, thinking they’ve “outgrown” them, and rely solely on social dancing to push them forward. But here’s the reality: social dancing without classroom practice keeps you stuck.

The instructors you admire at socials? They didn’t just wake up one day with flawless technique. They practiced, drilled, and refined their moves in the classroom—away from the crowd. The classroom is where you focus on the details, get personalised feedback, and truly understand the art of dancing. Without that, you’re just going through the motions, hoping for improvement that never really comes.

If you want to truly grow as a dancer, you can’t skip the classroom. No matter how long you’ve been dancing, consistent learning is the key to progress. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that showing up to socials is enough. The best dancers sweat it out in class before they shine on the floor.
